China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin on Tuesday called for closer exchanges between the mainland and Taiwan in a bid to achieve peace, stability and prosperity on both sides.
Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) made the remarks when he met Communist Party of China (CPC) delegates of Taiwan origin.
The delegates were here for a two-day meeting to elect delegates attending the CPC's 17th National Congress slated for the second half of this year.
Compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait should stand firmly against "Taiwan independence" to achieve peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, Jia said.
