China's major ports box volume down 9pc in first eight months

CHINA's major ports' container throughput fell nine per cent year on year to 77.72 million TEU, reports Xinhua.

Coastal ports moved 70.1 million TEU, a drop of 8.8 per cent over last year while inland river ports handled 7.65 million TEU, falling 11.3 per cent during the same period.

Ports in China saw a 4.9 per cent increase in cargo throughput to 4.5 billion tonnes from January to August. China's coastal ports moved 3.1 billion tonnes, a fall of 4.8 per cent while inland river ports handled 1.39 billion tonnes, an increase of 5.2 per cent.
