Taiwan urged to loosen control over financial exchanges with China's mainland
POSTED: 3:42 p.m. EDT, November 29,2006
A Chinese official has urged Taiwan to remove the restrictions on investment by Taiwan's financial organizations in the Chinese mainland.

"Consider the situation from the viewpoints of economic growth and mutual interest," said Li Weiyi, spokesman of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, at a routine press conference on Wednesday.

He said the mainland had shown consistent support for financial exchanges and cooperation across the Taiwan Strait.

"The mainland has made efforts in this regard, which is obvious to all," said Li.

Li said the mainland was willing to encourage non-governmental financial associations from both sides to discuss establishing cross-Strait financial supervision mechanisms.
