India edges closer to US container security customs scheme
POSTED: 9:05 a.m. EDT, July 17,2007

New Delhi is expected to give approval this week for India's participation in United States initiative aimed at disrupting supplies that could pose a security threat, reports the Press Trust of India.

US-bound cargo from Jawaharlal Nehru Port would be opened for scrutiny by US Homeland Security agents under the Container Security Initiative (CSI) under the terms of the deal, said the news agency.

India has identified Jawaharlal Nehru Port as the point where US Customs officials would be stationed to screen cargo bound for the United States under the multinational programme. Under the reciprocal agreement, India Customs can scrutinize US-origin India-bound cargo, but no American port has been selected by Indian customs for this purpose in the United States.
