China, EU parliaments hold regular meeting, pledge dialogue
POSTED: 10:22 a.m. EDT, June 30,2007
China's National People's Congress(NPC) and the European Parliament (EP) held their 24th meeting under a parliamentary exchange mechanism on Friday, agreeing to further dialogue and communications.

The EP Delegation for Relations with China, headed by Dirk Sterckx, are in China from June 23 to June 30 to hold two rounds of talks.

Sheng Huaren, vice chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, met on Thursday with the delegation.

Speaking of the progress made since their 23rd meeting in last November, Sheng said relations between China and the EU had maintained their good momentum with frequent exchanges of high-level visits.

China valued relations with EU, and would like to further promote dialogue and increase the level of bilateral cooperation, said Sheng.

He calls for continued good development of exchanges, urging the two sides to "seek common ground while reserving differences".

Sterckx said the EP had kept up good cooperative ties with the NPC. The two sides have conducted in-depth discussions on a broader scope of issues, yielding more fruit.

He said the EP would make efforts with China to continue the regular exchange mechanism.

The Chinese side also briefed the EP delegation on China's energy situation, policies of energy efficiency and emissions reduction and its stance on climate change.

The EP delegation appreciated the national plans released by China in early June to address climate change, and was willing to boost the technological exchanges on environmental protection.

The Chinese side also expressed gratitude for the EU's firm adherence to the one-China policy.

The EP delegation of 21 members from 13 EU nations and five major parties also went to Tibet to see two poverty eradication projects.

Commenting on economic and social development in Tibet, the delegation said the visit enabled them to know the real situation in the region.

The NPC and the EP established the regular exchange mechanism in 1981. The 25th meeting of will be held in Europe.
