Tianjin port hit its 2007 throughput target of 7 million TEU, reported Xinhau, adding that the port also reached its overall cargo volume objective of 300 million tons.
This came after the port saw throughput rise in the first four months of the year to 100 million tons, said a Tianjin Port statement.
Today, Tianjin Port looks to a 12 million TEU and 400 million ton annual throughput target to be achieved in three to four years. To boost throughput, the port will increase its investment in infrastructure from the originally planned CNY36.7 billion (US$4.8 billion) to CNY45 billion.
With more investment, Tianjin Port will have more than 80 deep-water berths by the year 2010, said Yu Rumin, president of Tianjin Port Group.
Construction of port infrastructure has been speeded up since, he said. The CNY3 billion Tianjin Port Alliance International Container Terminal, which consists of four container berths with 1.7 million TEU capacity, will be completed and put into use soon, he said.
Meanwhile, the CNY6.5 billion Tianjin Port Pacific International Container Terminal, which brings Tianjin Port six berths with container capacity of 4 million TEU, and the CNY2 billion dredged channel, which will also be completed at the end of this year, he said.
While Tianjin Dongjiang Bonded Port Area, the largest bonded port area approved by Beijing with total area of 10 square kilometres, will also start working on an area of two square kilometres, Mr Yu said.
Statistics show that Tianjin Port has added more than 40 container services since last year, adding the total number of container services to more than 100, said Xinhau. All of the top 20 container shipping companies in the world have services in Tianjin Port, the report said. |
