Tianjin's Binhai New Area to host China Shipping Summit 2007
POSTED: 8:35 a.m. EDT, May 29,2007
THE World Shipping (China) Summit 2007 will be held from November 1-2 in Tianjin's Binhai New Area. The three previous shipping summits had been hosted by Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen respectively.
Co-organisers, Cosco Group, Maritime China, Drewry Shipping Consultants and The Journal of Commerce, said the event is moving to Tianjin as its Binhai New Area is turning into "another hot destination" for investment in China.
Spurred on by the State Council's favourable economic policies, investment, labour and technologies have been pouring into this new area. As a result, the hub port of Tianjin, which connects Beijing to northern China, has been expanding its businesses to cater for the port logistics, free trade zone, hi-tech, marine engineering and shipping service sectors.
This year's official summit theme will be "Riding the Wave" in light of the ongoing boom in the container shipping industry driven by ever increasing global demand and the torrent of new shipbuilding orders. Moreover, say organisers, the capital market is giving renewed backing to shipping, and funds are flowing into the business.
The summit aims to bring together views, perspectives and insights of top CEOs, industry analysts, economists, government agencies, institutional investors and fund managers. Topics for discussion will focus on whether there is a shortage of port facilities, or whether investment in port infrastructure will become overheated.
The possibility of getting adequate returns on high-priced newbuildings, the integration of shipping and logistics service providers, and the contribution of emerging economies to the shipping industry will also be discussed among others key issues affecting the China trade.
The summit will also provide various networking events for participants, including a dinner co-hosted by the Municipal People's Government of Tianjin and the Cosco Group, and a city tour on November 1. A golf match and tour of Tianjin port and its logistics facilities have been organised for the afternoon of November 2. |
