A British aviation company has been fined GBP5,000 (US$8,159) by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) for shipping unlabelled dangerous goods through Stansted Airport on a cargo flight to Memphis by FedEx plane and then onto Kansas, according to Shipping Gazette.
Dorset-based Burwood Aviation Supplies admitted to a breach of the Dangerous Goods Regulations in April 2013 for transporting a chemical oxygen generator, used as emergency oxygen for aircraft passengers and crew.
The shipments lack of correct documentation accompanying an unmarked box unfit for carriage by air was flagged by the recipient of the item to the US Federal Aviation Administration.
According to the CAA prosecutor, the potential risks of chemical oxygen generators, used in aircraft overhead oxygen masks are triggered by a chemical reaction in the event of decompression.
The transportation of 144 chemical oxygen generators in unmarked boxes with insufficient cushioning on a passenger aircraft in 1996 led to activation of one or more resulting in a fire. The ValuJet DC-9 passenger aircraft crashed into the Florida Everglades and led to the death of 105 passengers and five crew members.
