Hong Kong's property transactions down 19.9 pct in 2006

Hong Kong saw 99,087 property sale and purchase agreements in 2006, down 19.9 percent from 2005, latest statistics by the Land Registry revealed here Thursday.

The total consideration involved in these agreements also fell 20.3 percent year-on-year to 315.2 billion HK dollars (40.5 billion U.S. dollars), according to the Land Registry.

There were 125,983 assignments of building units lodged for registration in 2006, down 19.4 percent from 2005.

The number of building mortgages and legal charges rose to 117 last year, up 31.5 percent from 2005 but the number of other mortgages and legal charges fell 26.7 percent, to 101,222.
