Container shipping line Evergreen will extend its peak season surcharge (PSS) and implement an emergency bunker surcharge on its services between Asia and India and Europe.
Evergreen is extending its US$175 per teu PSS until 31 December on the westbound Asia and Indian-subcontinent to Europe and the Mediterranean trades because of "strong demand for space".
Forwarders recently described peak season surcharges implemented by carriers in August as 'bold", given that volumes were down year-on-year and shipping lines had laid-up ships while volumes were low.
Evergreen said it would also introduce an EBS to "reflect cost of bunker consumption based on the cargo volume".
From 1 October, all westbound services from the Far East to Europe and the Mediterranean will be subject to a $188teu bunker surcharge, while services from the Indian sub-continent will be charged $57 per teu.
