UPS boss slams state of US-Latin America trade links

UPS chief executive Mike Eskew sharply criticised he quality of existing trade links between the US and Latin America, reported UK Transport Intelligence's web site.
"We have so many complicated customs and security requirements in place that it's often easier to import goods from Europe or Asia," Mr Eskew said.
Customs barriers are the biggest barrier North and South American trade, he said. Car parts moving south to north "face a staggering 28,200 customs transactions..." Cars from Europe or Asia going to North America involve a single customs transaction, he said.
"If we delay cross-border shipments by just a day, the Americas lose their proximity advantage over Asia," he added.
Mr Eskew also recommended that Latin American states to improve their customs and to spend more on transport infrastructure. Transport facilities drive trade-flows, he said. "Global commerce is like a river - it tends to flow down the paths of least resistance." |
