OOCL has announced the naming of its 12th 8,063-TEU containership, ordered from and built by Samsung Heavy Industries.
The newbuilding was named the OOCL Southampton by sponsor Mariana Cheng, a noted humanitarian and the wife of HSBC chairman Vincent Cheng.
The OOCL Southampton will be deployed on the EU2 (Asia-Europe Westbound and Europe-East Asia Eastbound) Loop with the Grand Alliance with a port rotation of Kaohsiung, Shekou, Yantian, Hong Kong, Singapore, Le Havre, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Antwerp, Southampton, Gioia Tauro, Jeddah, Jebel Ali, Singapore and back to Kaohsiung in a 63-day round trip.
The naming coincided with a new contract signed by OOCL chief executive Philip Chow for an option on another 4,506-TEU vessel, built by Samsung. This vessel would be in addition to a contract for five 4,506-TEU vessels, also built by Samsung for OOCL, signed on April 23, 2007.
