NATIONAL Air Cargo of Orchard Park, New York, will pay US$28 million for falsely claiming on-time deliveries in a case involving the US Defense Department.
The guilty plea came last week in federal court to a felony charge of making a false statement, and was announced by the US Attorney's office in Buffalo, New York. There are other offences related to the case for which sentencing will take place in December, reported Buffalo New York's Business First newspaper.
National Air Cargo is owned by Christopher Alf, of Lakeview, NY and Boca Raton, FLA, the report said.
Assistant US Attorney Gretchen Wylegala said the company handles various airfreight defence contracts. National Air Cargo was found to have falsified a document showing an on-time delivery. Several federal governmental agencies had been involved in an investigation of the company's billing and shipping practices.
Sentencing is set for December 11. The maximum charge against the corporation is $8.8 million. In addition, National Air Cargo will pay $4.4 million in restitution to the federal government, and a civil forfeiture claim of $7,429,000 and $7,371,000 in a related civil claim.
