THE first direct air cargo service from Urmuqi, a city in western Xinjiang province to Germany's Schwerin Parchim Airport made its maiden flight on October 3, Xinhua reported.
This is the third airline connecting China to Parchim Airport, and is operated by mainland carrier Oriental Sky Aviation Service Co Ltd. It provides a twice-weekly service using a freighter chartered from UK-based cargo carrier MK Airlines.
A senior manager from Oriental Sky Aviation Service said flying to Germany from Urmuqi takes 10 hours, four hours less than flying from Shanghai.
The service makes economic sense, he said, because it provides a cheaper rail-air intermodal link, involving the movement of cargo by rail to Urmuqi then by air to Germany, saving up to 30 per cent of the cost compared to flying cargo from Beijing or Shanghai, said Xinhua.
