Shanghai to focus on developing modern logistics industry
POSTED: 9:08 a.m. EDT, June 14,2007
Modern logistics will emerge as Shanghai's pillar industry during the course of the current 11th Five-Year Plan that runs until the end of the decade, said an official of the Shanghai Development and Reform Commission.

The "Shanghai City Modern Logistics Industry Development 11th Five-Year Plan" sees China's biggest city becoming an important international logistics hub for the Asia-Pacific region.

Other targets set out in Shanghai's development plan include maintaining the logistics industry's annual growth rate at more than 10 per cent, raising the GNP contribution of value-added logistics services to over 13 per cent, and increasing the volume of international transshipment containers to account for about 10 per cent of the city's total container throughput, said Wu Zhenguo, Vice Director of the Shanghai Development and Reform Commission.

In order to improve Shanghai's modern logistics industry, the city aims to boost the development of its logistics industries for its ports, manufacturing and distribution sectors. Authorities in Shanghai also intend to encourage further logistics cooperation with other areas within the rapidly developing Yangtze River Delta.
