Shanghai to Savannah real-time test
POSTED: 9:16 a.m. EDT, June 8,2007
Shanghai International Port Group , the Georgia Ports Authority and Savi Networks together plan launch an RFID-based network. RFID stands for radio frequency identity and is a tag attached to almost anything which transmits a signal saying what it is and where it is going to.

The network will thus automatically track the location and security of containerized cargo transported between Shanghai, one of the world¨s largest and busiest ports, and the Port of Savannah in Georgia.

The solution will be built upon an open, international standards-based network platform, including compatibility with ISO standard 18000-7 for active RFID devices and ISO standard 18185 for electronic container security devices, both operating at the 433.92 MHz radio frequency.

Once the test is completed it will be extended. In the quite near future it will be very unusual for containerized cargo to go with RFID tags. It makes sorting and checking that much simpler. As the price of RFID tags gets lower so the use will extend.
