THE second phase of Guangzhou-Nansha port with six deep-water container berths has been completed, Xinhua reports.
With the six new berths, Nansha has had 10 container berths with total quay length of 3.5 kilometres, the report said.
Container volume is expected to reach 4.3 million TEU this year with the operation of the new berths, the report said.
Boosted by the expansion of Nansha port area, the container throughput of Guangzhou surged 43.3 per cent to 4.39 million TEU in the first half of this year, representing the fastest growth among major coastal ports in China, the report said.
After several years of construction, Nansha area has been turned into a transit hub for containers, oil products and automobiles. The expansion of Nansha port area will double the size of Guangzhou port by 2010 when the total cargo throughput is expected to hit 350 million tons and container volume should exceed 10 million TEU, an official of Guangzhou Port Group said.
There are 30 domestic and international shipping services calling Nansha, covering ports in Europe, America, Africa, southeast Asia, the Mediterranean and the Red Sea, the report added.
