WHAT:
The Toronto Port Authority hosts the 153rd annual Port of Toronto Beaver Hat Ceremony to mark the opening of the 2014 shipping season.
WHY:
The Beaver Hat Ceremony, an annual event and Port tradition dating back to 1861, welcomes the the arrival of the first ocean vessel for the shipping season into the Port of Toronto. The ceremony will take place aboard the M/V Lubie.
WHO:
M/V Lubie Ship Captain Jacek Kurpiel will be ‘crowned’ with a nearly 200-year-old silk and beaver top hat by Port of Toronto Harbour Master Angus Armstrong.
WHEN: Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at 10 a.m. ET
WHERE: Aboard the M/V Lubie Redpath Sugar, 95 Queens Quay East, at the foot of Jarvis Street (entry through east-side security checkpoint with photo identification)
MEDIA NOTE:
- Proper footwear is recommended in order to climb a steep ship gangway. High heel shoes are NOT recommended.
- An outer coat is recommended as this is a marine industrial environment.
- Paid parking is available at the Corus building (25 Dockside Drive) and north of Redpath Sugar at Loblaws.
