Shanghai will set up an international comprehensive shipping experimental zone in Yangshan Port, according to a detailed plan on building Shanghai into an international shipping centre, reported NewsTrak Daily.
The detailed plan launched by China's State Council says the government will grant tax incentives to shipping companies registered at Yangshan Port's comprehensive shipping experimental zone.
Industry insiders believe the move will be good for shipping enterprises to congregate or locate in Yangshan port and improve the competitiveness of the port by and large.
Yang Xiong, deputy mayor of Shanghai, said that Shanghai will focus on enhancing the logistics system, including railway and road transportation networks, and push the construction of shipping services of Yangshan Port.
Shanghai's port throughput and container throughput fell 12 percent and 15 percent respectively in the first quarter of 2009.
Yang said the detailed plan is very timely and necessary for the city's construction of an international shipping centre.
