LA-Long Beach harbour commissioners voted this week to charge a US$15 per TEU tax in 2009 and then increase it to $18 in 2010 - on top of the already passed $35 per TEU charge to applied June 1.
The Associated Press reported that the money is to fight air pollution, and the tax is expected to raise $1.6 billion to help pay to replace old diesel trucks with newer cleaner-burning ones.
Among other projects to be funded by the levy are several major railway track improvements, the construction of a six-lane bridge and a four-lane elevated highway, AP said.
