Maersk to revamp Far East-Middle East service loops

2008-2-29

Maersk Line, the world's largest container shipping line by fleet size, plans to upgrade its Far East-Middle East network from April 2008, reports AXS-Alphaliner News.

As a result, the ocean-going carrier will commence a new loop, the FM-2, which is designed to link the South China ports of Nansha and Yantian to Southeast Asia via the ports of Tanjung Pelepas and Colombo for onwards carriage to Dammam and Bandar Abbas.

The new service is also said to include a Jebel Ali-Dammam-Jebel Ali two-way loop to most likely act as a feeder leg for other services.

Other service amendments will affect the FM-1 and FM-5 loops. In particular, the improved FM1 service is expected to reduce the transit time between the Far East and the Arabo-Persian Gulf by one day, owing to a decision to cease westbound port of calls at Hong Kong and Yantian, the report added.
