A Missing player, as well as the biggest, Maersk Line, belatedly joined the recently launched Container Shipping Information Service's (CSIS) global public relations drive to promote public appreciation of the benefits of container shipping.
"We feel it our responsibility to provide tools to create a better understanding of our industry," said Maersk Line CEO Eivind Kolding in a company statement. "Maersk Line has been continuously introducing leading technology and operational best practices that further enhance marine transport performance."
Formed by 24 container shipping companies, the PR initiative is centred on a website, www.shipsandboxes.com, that features "Did You Know" and "Jargon Buster" sections. Through CSIS, the industry aims to show what it does is vital to the lives of most people. It also plans to openly address public concerns such as the environment, globalisation, innovation and security.
The following container shipping companies comprise CSIS: Atlantic Container Line, China Shipping (Group) Company, CMA-CGM Group, Cosco, Crowley Maritime Corporation, CSAV (Compania Sud-Americana de Vapores), Evergreen Marine Corp, Hamburg Sudamerikanische Dampfschifffahrtsgesellschaft, Hanjin Shipping, Hapag-Lloyd, Hyundai Merchant Marine Co, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Maersk Line, Malaysia International Shipping Corporation (MISC), Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC), Mitsui OSK Lines, Neptune Orient Lines Ltd/APL, Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK), Orient Overseas Container Line Ltd (OOCL), Pacific International Lines Ltd, United Arab Shipping Co, Wan Hai Lines, Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp, Zim Integrated Shipping Service Ltd.
