Maersk christens 10,000-TEU Eugen Maersk at Odense Shipyard

2007-12-19

The world's biggest container shipping company has christened its latest newbuild, the 10,000-TEU containership, the Eugen Maersk, at the Odense Steel Shipyard.

"Lady Bond accompanied by her husband, Sir John Bond, chairman of Vodafone Group, honoured AP Moller-Maersk and the yard by naming the newbuilding," said a company statement.

Like her seven sister ships, the Eugen Maersk will be part of the series of the world's largest container vessels, and will set new standards for safety and environmental concern.

Environmentally-friendly silicone paint covers the hull of the vessel below the waterline - reducing water resistance and cutting the vessel's fuel consumption by 1,200 tonnes per year, said a Maersk statement.

With her 14-cylinder 110,000 BHP (brake horse power) flex diesel engine, the ship will enter Maersk Line's worldwide service and thereby together with the other vessels contribute to a global, competitive and flexible transport service, said the Maersk statement.
