Kaohsiung port's container handling volume amounted to 8.47 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) for the first 10 months of this year, hitting a record high for the January-October period, according to tallies released Friday by the Kaohsiung Harbor Bureau.
The figure represents an increase of 380,000 TEUs, or 4.74 percent, over the same period last year, bureau officials said.
The officials attributed the growth in the port's container handling volume to the replacement of bulk handling by containerization in grain shipping, predicting that the volume for the whole year will surpass 10 million TEUs.
