Kaohsiung port reports rise in Q1-Q3 box traffic

2007-11-5

Kaohsiung Harbour handled 7.85 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containers in the first nine months of this year, up a mere 4.41 percent year-on-year, according to statistics compled by the Kaohsiung Harbor Bureau under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications.

Due to harsh competition from major harbors worldwide, Kaosiung Harbour has been fighting an uphill battle to hold onto its world No. 6 position but the bureau still anticipated the harbour's container-handling volume will grow 5 pct annually to break the 10-million TEU mark this year.

Kaohsiung Harbor Bureau director, H.M. Hsieh admitted it was very difficult for the harbour to retain its world No. 6 position this year because some major harbours, including the seventh-ranked Rotterdam of the Netherlands and Dubai of the United Arabia Emirates, had seen rapid growth in container-handling volume over the past several years.
