US airways has announced that it has moved into a remodeled airline cargo centre at El Paso International Airport.
US Airways, which processes cargo for three other airlines in El Paso and soon will add a fourth, is the second airline to move cargo operations to the centre, after Southwest Airlines moved there several years ago.
The relocation from a nearby outdated centre gives US Airways a larger and more modern space -16,000 square feet versus 10,000 square feet in the old building, said Darin Anthes, El Paso station manager for US Airways in a report by El Paso Times.
Eva Aguayo, border district sales manager for Continental Airlines cargo sales division, said the larger space was much needed and would help her company expand its cargo business. Continental is the largest cargo shipper in the US Airways centre.
The new centre, combined with Continental's growing number of international flights, is expected to help the airline double its El Paso cargo business this year, Ms Aguayo said.
Last year, Continental shipped about 3,500 tons from El Paso. Much of it is trucked from the El Paso airport to Houston, where the cargo makes connections with international flights, she said.
"This (cargo) is where we make our money" as an airline, Ms Aguayo said. "Continental hauls everything from animals to medical supplies from El Paso."
