Canadian Transport Minister Lawrence Cannon has announced that the government has issued a certificate of intent to merge Vancouver area port authorities.
This would enable them to operate as one port authority to be called the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, said a Transport Canada communique.
"Integration of these ports [Fraser River, North Fraser and Vancouver] is a key policy measure under Canada's Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative," said Mr Cannon. "It could also enhance Canada's competitiveness in the global trade environment and may be the most effective means of maximising port efficiencies and optimising port planning."
The issue of the certificate of intent to amalgamate and its publication in the Canada Gazette is the first formal step towards merger. The next step will be the publication of a notice of the certificate of intent in newspapers in British Colombia, which will begin a 30-day public consultation period.
"An amalgamation of these Canada Port Authorities enables a corporate management approach to taking advantage of emerging business opportunities in the Asia-Pacific region, and positions them to better respond to changing market pressures," said International Trade Minister David Emerson.
