Italy¨s port of Savona has selected a bidding group headed by AP Moller-Maersk as its partner in the construction and operation of a new 600,000-TEU container terminal in the Ligurian city.
The new terminal will have 700m of berth with depths up to 20m backed by 25 hectares of yard space. The port is expected to have handling capacity for around 600,000 TEUs, taking total container capacity to around 850,000 TEUs per year. It is expected to become fully operational in 2012.
The facility is expected to cost US$600 million to build of which $200 million will be invested by the Maersk-led group and the remainder by the port authority.
The new terminal will add significant new capacity to the Ligurian port range, which already features two of Italy¨s largest box ports in Genoa and La Spezia.
It will also significantly increase Maersk¨s regional presence, which already has an interest in Genoa flagship Voltri terminal.
