Qantas' Cairns base to trim staff yet absorb Australian Airlines workers

Qantas has announced that it will establish a new base in Cairns, a town of 128,000 on the Queensland coast, from September, following a decision to close its Australian Airlines operation which will result in the facility losing 50 of its 950 jobs.
"We expect the majority of Australian Airlines cabin crew to take up new positions in Cairns," said Qantas executive general manager John Borghetti.
"The new base will employ 220 cabin crew recruited from Australian Airlines Cairns base. Cabin crew positions are also available with Jetstar, which is currently recruiting for its new international base in Cairns," he said.
Mr Borghetti said that in addition to cabin crew positions in Cairns, all Australian Airlines pilots will join Qantas operations, with an opportunity for half - about 40 - to remain in Cairns to crew B767s that will continue to use Cairns airport with the rest relocating to Sydney.
He also said positions would also be available for all administrative staff in Brisbane or Sydney and additional cabin crew positions would be available in London, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.
Mr Borghetti said the Qantas base would operate B767s, B737s and A330 aircraft between Cairns and a range of destinations on the Qantas domestic network, as well as Qantas' Cairns-Narita flights.
