Daewoo orders $1.05bn worth of ships

The Korean yard, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering has added another $1.05bn worth of ships to its orderbook with deals from German owners, reports TradeWinds.

Daewoo said it has contracted to build 12 boxships for delivery by June 2010.

Norddeutsche Reederei H Schuldt has signed up for 8 vessels, including 4 ships of 8,400-teu, worth $782mn.

And Thien & Heyenga will have four 4,400-teu built there.

Daewoo said in a statement: "Demand for container vessels is increasing, helping us receive orders for 17 ships so far in the first half, from five for all of last year."
