APL, the container arm of Singapore's Neptune Orient Lines (NOL) has started running reefer trains in India, which until recently, was a monopoly of the state-owned Container Corp. of India Ltd (Concor).
Run by APL's India Infrastructure and Logistics Pvt Ltd under the brand APL lndia Linx, the joint venture's first full reefer train ran from Loni in Uttar Pradesh to Jawaharlal Nehru (JN) Port in Mumbai with 43 containers of buffalo meat from India's biggest buffalo meat exporter, Allana Sons Ltd.
Livemint.com, an Indian business news portal, also reported that once the consignment reached the port, the cargo was to be shipped on APL containerships to three destinations in western Asia.
India's reefer box market is estimated at 70,000 FEUs a year and is growing at 10 -12 per cent annually, according to the Container Shipping Lines Association, an industry body representing container shipping lines operating to and from India.
