SAS CARGO Group's subsidiary, Spirit Air Cargo Handling Sweden, will have use of a modern 15,000-square metre terminal in Cargo City at Stockholm's Arlanda Airport in the spring of 2010 under an agreement with Nordic Airport Properties.
The new terminal will double Spirit's existing capacity at Arlanda airport, said an SAS statement after the deal was signed. Spirit estimates it will handle some 200,000 tons annually at the new terminal.
This comes as demand for air cargo handling in Stockholm has been increasing. Anders Skantz, managing director of Spirit Air Cargo Handling Sweden, said demand for such services is driven by higher number of airlines choosing Arlanda as the destination for all-cargo aircraft and because of SAS's decision to increase the number of Arlanda intercontinental departures.
"More than the increased capacity, the new terminal will also live up to the increased demand from our customers regarding high security levels, high efficiency, product differentiation and high quality standards," said Mr Skantz.
This latest cargo capacity increase follows an agreement signed in August for Nordic Airport Properties to enlarge Spirit Air Cargo Handling Sweden's current air cargo handling terminal at Landvetter Airport, Gothenburg, by 5,000 square metres, said a statement from the SAS Cargo Group.
Established in 2006, Spirit Air Cargo Handling has 12 terminals around Scandinavia and is certified according to both the ISO 9001 and 14001 standards.
