POSTED: 8:47 a.m. EDT, August 9,2007
Ports on the Yangtze River have posted record high cargo volumes for the first half of the year, Xinhua reports.

Statistics from Changjiang (Yangtze) Shipping Administration Bureau, a division of the Ministry of Communications, show that river ports along the Yangtze River handled 441 million tons of cargo in the first half of this year, up 16.6 per cent over the same period a year ago.

The total cargo volume handled by Yangtze ports during the reporting period included 55.37 million tons of foreign cargo, up 21.4 per cent; and 2.51 million TEU, an increase of 43 per cent year on year.

Jiangsu river ports contributed the largest volumes to the Yangtze River trade, with throughput accounting for 67 per cent of the total, while foreign trade cargo accounted for 90.8 per cent of the total foreign trade handled.

The bureau expects Yangtze cargo volume to continue to grow quickly in the second half of this year to reach a total of 880 million tons of cargo, including 110 million tons of foreign trade and five million TEU.
