China seeks private investment in airfreight industry

China plans to attract private investment in the express airfreight delivery sector to boost the development of the industry, according to Da Wa, the Director General of the Post Office's regulatory department.
Mr Da said he was contacting other departments to gather statistics on Chinese express delivery companies, and intends to lay the groundwork for policies to promote development of the private sector, said a Xinhua report.
This comes as the express delivery sector has seen rapid development in recent years, with the market expected to grow by more than 25 per cent this year, said Liu Jianxin of the China Freight Forwarders Association.
Demand for express airfreight services is expected to increase as China experiences higher domestic consumer demand and urbanisation increases. Also influencing the growth is the surging demand for express delivery services from large state-owned and private enterprises, expected to heat up in the run-up to the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The emergence of business-to-business e-commerce, online shopping and postal shopping have also raised demand for express airfreight delivery services, Mr Liu noted. Along with higher demand for international express mail and package delivery services among transnational companies, especially as China's foreign trade is predicted to grow at a rate of more than 25 per cent this year, said Mr Liu. |
