Major ports in China handled a total of 42.96 million TEU from January to May, an increase of 24.2 per cent compared to the same period a year ago.
Within this total, sea ports handled 39.89 million TEU, up 23.8 per cent year on year, while river ports handled 3.06 million TEU, up 30.4 per cent.
During the same period, the cumulative volume of general cargo passing through these ports rose 15.6 per cent to 2.09 billion tons. Foreign trade cargo grew by 16.3 per cent to 731 million tons over January to May 2006.
According to statistics from China's Ministry of Communications (MOC), the Baltic Dry Index also registered a seven per cent fluctuation in May, which analysts attributed to the fast growth in international freight rates and severe congestion at Australian ports.
MOC also predicts that a five to 10 per cent tariff increase levied on steel exports from the mainland, effective from June 1, will have a negative impact on the world shipping market, Xinhua reports. |
