HK container throughput shrinks, Guangzhou gains on Shenzhen
POSTED: 8:26 a.m. EDT, June 22,2007
Hong Kong'S container throughput dropped 3.5 per cent year on year in May to 2.08 million TEUs while its volume from January to May fell one per cent over the same period last year to 9.44 million TEU.

Results, reported by Logistics Week, come from the mainland's Ministry of Communications and Hong Kong Port Development Council.

Statistics show that that Hong Kong is losing, Shenzhen is gaining, and Guangzhou gaining on Shenzhen in container throughput. Singapore retains its number one global spot followed by Shanghai, which surpassed Hong Kong for the number two place in the first quarter.

In the first quarter, Hong Kong handled 1.14 million fewer TEU than Singapore and 845,000 fewer TEU than Shanghai, which clearly put Hong Kong in the number three position in the global ranking of container ports.

In May, Hong Kong's Kwai Tsing terminals handled 1.52 million TEU, up by 13.5 per cent year on year. In contrast though, throughput from operations outside Kwai Tsing saw a sharp decrease of 31.5 per cent to 560,000 TEU.

During the first five months, box volume of the Kwai Tsing terminals cumulated to a total of 6.84 million TEU, up 12.2 per cent. But throughput of other facilities dropped 24.4 per cent to 2.6 million TEU.

Shenzhen handled 1.6 million TEU in May, up 14.06 per cent year on year. From January to May, the port's cumulative throughput rose 9.7 per cent over the same period a year ago to 7.51 million TEU.

Guangzhou throughput surged 42.5 per cent year on year to 720,900 TEU in May and accumulated to 3.57 million TEU during the first five months, up 41.1 per cent year on year.
