call for strike action at Calais by France's CGT union, which represents port workers, was having little impact on freight traffic this morning according to freight sources.
The CGT had called for strike action to commence at midnight last night if the Port Authority did not heed the union's demands for a greater police presence to deal with migrants in and around the French Channel port.
A handful of workers employed to inspect HGVs entering the port - and where the union claims security is insufficient to deal with the threat posed by migrants - walked off the job, but were replaced by managers.
However, the union warned that if the situation did not improve in the truck check-in area industrial action could be stepped up.
"For the moment, we don't want to penalise activity at the port,"a union official said, adding that it was regrettable that there were no discussions with the port operator Societe d'Exploitation des Ports du Detroit (SEPD) on the issue.
The union claims that more security resources are required at Calais'Port Est terminal to ensure the safety of staff and customers. It is also calling for roundtable discussions on workloads relating to the construction of Calais Port 2015 - a major infrastructure project which got underway recently at the French Channel port.
