Maersk's forwarding arm, Damco, has appointed Thomas Knudsen as regional head of its Asia business, comprising North Asia, South-east Asia and Oceania, to assume his role effective immediately, according to Shipping Gazette.
He will be based in Singapore and will hold responsibility for day-to-day business, reporting directly to Hanne Sorensen, CEO for Damco.
The diversity of markets and customer needs in Asia create vast opportunities for Damco to partner with stakeholders in terms of supply chain management and freight forwarding, said Mr Knudsen in a company statement.
"For example we anticipate growth of sourcing activities in Southeast Asia with the increased shift of manufacturing out of China, and regional Free Trade Agreements are also opening up new, exciting opportunities for logistics players like us," he added.
Prior to his new role, he was Asia Pacific regional CEO for Maersk Line and held leadership, commercial, trade and route management roles in Maersk Line in the Middle East, North America, Europe and Asia. Of these 20 years with Maersk, he also had a year's experience in 2006 heading the then Maersk Logistics in France, overseeing France, Tunisia and Algeria.
Damco is also looking to increase customers' use of its freight forwarding, warehousing and distribution solutions. "We have just set up the first high quality, international standard Container Freight Station (CFS) warehouse in Myanmar, reinforcing our first mover position in this emerging market," he added.
It will also expand to open up 14 new commercial offices in Asia this year which will match pockets of growth in the global economy.
