India's Airport Authority (AAI) has been ordered by the Ministry of Civil Aviation to clear cargo consignments on a 24/7 basis without any "restrictions" and with immediate effect at Chennai airport.
Civil Aviation Secretary Ashok Lavasa gave the direction to AAI officials following considered requests made by the Air Cargo Agent Association and Chennai Customs House Agents Association, media reported.
"Secretary, MoCA directed AAI to do-away with restriction and accordingly AAI has decided to implement the decision of 24/7 clearance of consignment with effect from July three, 2014," a statement from the Airport Authority of India said.
Lavasa has already inaugurated its first Airport Operations Control Centre (AOCC) at Chennai airport, and plans to invest heavily in ten more airports in Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Pune, Trivandrum, Calicut, Jaipur, Mangalore, Tiruchirapalli and Guwahati.
The hub has been set up to handle increasing air traffic as competition grows between airports in the region to improve service levels.
