Emirates continues to shine in the air cargo world, bucking the downtrend set by rivals, and unlike them remaining profitable as it expands its fleet and boosts revenue - 8.9 per cent in the first quarter, according to Shipping Gazette.
The Dubai-based airline's SkyCargo business raised its revenue to AED11.3 billion (US$3 billion). Profits for the cargo business were not broken-out.
Fleet expansion grew its freight tonne kilometres 10.2 per cent year on year but tonnage carried lagged behind at 7.9 per cent. The cargo handling business increased revenues 8.3 per cent, driven mainly by growth in the UK.
But the use of larger and more fuel-efficient aircraft resulted in a lower break-even point. Even the company's freighters saw 12 per cent more flight-time, operated by two new Boeing 777-200 long-range freighters, reported UK's Transport Intelligence.
According to the airline the markets that pushed down growth in cargo volumes in terms of tonnage were in the Far East and Africa. All areas except West Asia and the Indian Ocean grew sales in double-digit percentages.
The performance of the Emirates group overall was even healthier than that of the cargo business, with the passenger business increasing revenue 13.8 per cent to AED65.4 billion.
