German flag carrier Lufthansa is looking to increase its flights from Edinburgh Airport over the next 18 months, in what would be its first Scottish expansion in five years, the Scotsman reports.
The airline, which currently operates three daily flights to its Frankfurt hub, said it was considering creating another flight - either to increase the Frankfurt route to four daily flights, or to introduce a new destination in Germany - to Munich or Dusseldorf. A spokesman for Lufthansa told the newspaper that a record 175,000 passengers flew with the airline between Frankfurt and Edinburgh in 2006 - 3.5 percent higher than the previous year.
About 72 percent of Lufthansa's passengers flying from Edinburgh to Frankfurt transfer to onward connections - with other German and European destinations proving to be popular, as well as long-haul routes such as Beijing. Austrian capital Vienna was the top onward destination for Edinburgh passengers travelling through Frankfurt during the first nine months of 2007, with an 18.6 percent rise in popularity on the same period last year. |
