GUANGZHOU, March 12, SinoCast -- The Port of Guangzhou will invest CNY 20 billion in building a 200,000-ton sea-route and 39 deep water docks in five years ending in 2010, expecting to rise its cargo throughput to 350 million tons and container capacity to 10 million TEUs by the year, revealed Ding Zhiming, deputy director general of the port authority.

22 docks were built in 2006 with 8 having a 10,000-ton capacity each, including China's largest rolled dock for vehicles in Shazi Island and the largest oil products chemical dock in Southern China. The sea-route between the Nansha port area and the mouth of Pearl River was broadened to 255 meters and deepened to 13 meters under the sea level.

The port has opened 17 direct international routes to Europe, North America, the Red Sea area, Southeastern Asia, South Korea and Japan, etc., 13 routes between Hong Kong and Macao as well as 39 domestic routes.

The port achieved a cargo throughput of 300 million tons and a container throughput of 6.6 million TEUs in 2006. An addition of 69.24 million tons of cargo throughput and 6.04 million TEUs will be achieved during the 2006-to-2010 period.
