Egypt makes mediation between Palestinian factions in Cairo
POSTED: 11:15 a.m. EDT, May 27,2007
Egypt is making fresh contacts with Palestinian factions in efforts to stop their infighting and renew their ceasefire with Israel, the official MENA news agency reported Saturday.

A Fatah delegation arrived in Cairo Saturday evening, which will be the first Palestinian faction that Egypt will contact with.

During its several-day stay in Cairo, the delegation will hold talks with Egyptian officials on the latest development in the Palestinian territories and efforts to stop the Palestinian infighting and renew the ceasefire between the Palestinians and Israel, MENA quoted diplomatic sources as saying.

According to MENA, the Fatah visit came upon an invitation from the Egyptian leadership to all Palestinian factions to find solutions to the Palestine issue.

Fatah's rival Hamas movement is expected to send a delegation to Cairo on Sunday.

For the Egyptian side, a delegation is also formed to meet with Palestinian factional representatives separately, with no intention to hold a meeting bringing all the factions around one table, said MENA.

The Egyptian mediation came after Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas of Fatah and Prime Minister Ismail Haneya of Hamas held a secret meeting at Abbas' headquarters in Gaza City on Tuesday night, which tackled on reinforcing the ceasefire between Hamas and Fatah in addition to renewing calmness with Israel.

More than 40 people were killed in less than a week as supporters of the rival Hamas and Fatah of the Palestinian national unity government clashed for several days in the Gaza Strip before reaching a ceasefire on May 16.

Meanwhile, Israel is intensifying its strikes on the Gaza Strip, accusing the Hamas movement and other militants of continuing rockets attacks on southern Israel.
