German chancellor confident over EU constitution
POSTED: 11:22 a.m. EDT, May 22,2007

German Chancellor Angela Merkel remained confident as she is going through European countries to salvage the virtually dead EU constitution, said German deputy government spokesman Thomas Steg on Monday.

"We are confident that we can present a very good and widely acceptable plan," said Steg.

Merkel, who will meet Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen on Tuesday, will visit almost all the EU countries on the issue.

The German chancellor, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, is expected to present a roadmap for the EU constitution in June at a EU summit in Brussels.

The EU constitution treaty, designed to streamline the decision- making process of the European Union, was rejected by French and Dutch voters two years ago.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has called for the EU member states to approve a limited core text to shy away from many of the controversial issues that many European citizens dreaded.
