Hu urges overseas Chinese to do their bit for peaceful reunification of China
POSTED: 10:55 a.m. EDT, June 21,2007
Chinese President Hu Jintao on Wednesday called on overseas Chinese to contribute to the peaceful reunification of China.

Hu made the remarks when meeting visiting members of overseas Chinese societies at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

Overseas Chinese have made a great contribution to China's independence and rejuvenation, as well as its reform and modernization drive, said Hu.

The complete reunification of China and rejuvenation of the Chinese nation are the common aspiration of all Chinese at home and abroad, and need their concerted efforts as well, the president said.

Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, also attended the meeting.

State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan said in a separate meeting on Wednesday morning that he hoped overseas Chinese would support the theme of peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and take a firm stand against Taiwan's secessionist activities.
