China disatisfies with German attack on reeducation
POSTED: 11:41 a.m. EDT, May 16,2007
On Tuesday, China expressed strong dissatisfaction over and firm opposition to a resolution passed by German parliament attacking China's reeducation through labor system.

"The German parliament ignores China's achievements in the democratic and legal system construction, but distorts and assaults China's reeducation through labor system, which greatly interferes in China's internal affairs," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Jiang Yu said in a statement.

The system is based on special or relevant laws and regulations approved and promulgated by the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress and the State Council, said Jiang, adding it plays an important role in maintaining public security, preventing and reducing crimes.

According to Jiang, the reeducation center safeguards the legitimate rights and interests of those subjected to reeducation through labor. They also enjoy the legitimate right of election, the freedom of religious belief and communication.

Besides, their dignity and legitimate private properties are protected and they are not subject to torture or abuse, said Jiang.

China advocates to hold international dialogue and cooperation on human rights on the basis of equality and mutual respect, the spokesperson said.

"But we firmly oppose to any move that interferes in other countries' internal affairs under the pretext of human rights, "she said.
