The Khalifa Port Container Terminal handled 41 per cent more containers during the first seven months of the year at 772,000 TEU, according to Abu Dhabi Ports, on the back of rapid growth in polymer exports and transshipment activity across the Gulf, according to Shipping Gazette.
Said Abu Dhabi Ports CEO Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi: "Our ability to handle record loads across the cargo and transportation market has been facilitated by our commitment to implementing operational efficiencies and adopting next-generation technologies."
Abu Dhabi Ports also reported that general and bulk cargo grew 21 per cent to 8.71 million tonnes from January to July compared to the same period last year, reported London's Gulf Business magazine.
In its first phase of development, Khalifa Port has a capacity of 2.5 million TEU and 12 million tons of general cargo. While further phases of development are planned as market demand requires, the port will be able to handle up to 15 million TEU and 35 million tons of general cargo per year at full build-out.
