The Port of Los Angeles posted a 3.8 per cent year-on-year increase in August container cargo to 786,677 TEU while Long Beach's August throughput was up 22.8 per cent to 703,652 TEU, according to Shipping Gazette.
LA container imports increased 6.3 per cent to 383,551 TEU, with exports down 14 per cent at 143,936 TEU. Empties grew 14 per cent to 234,927 TEU.
Long Beach imports increased 19.1 per cent to 358,262 TEU, with exports rising 9.4 per cent to 138,765 TEU. Empties grew 42.1 per cent to 206,625 TEU.
Long Beach attributed its best month in history to growing consumer confidence, a strong dollar, retail inventory growth, and its strategic partnerships that are now showing results.
Los Angeles said its August volumes were among the five best monthly results in the port's history and attributed this to cargo owners coming back after diverting to the east coast and its ability to handle bigger ships now calling at the port.
In describing San Pedro Bay's August volumes, KeyBanc Capital Markets analyst Todd Fowler said: "A portion of the strength is likely attributable to some share returning from eastern and Gulf ports, as well as a strengthening dollar supporting imports."
