In order to further strengthen the high environmental awareness already existing among the employees of the Port Development Company and in order to document it internally and towards the outside world the company decided two years ago to build its own eco-management system. To this end the environmentally relevant processes were analyzed, optimized and documented.
The implementation and efficiency of the eco-management system in the individual organizational divisions has now been certified by DNV GL SE Business Assurance Germany (formerly GL) to standard ISO 14001 and complements the quality management according to ISO 9001 already applied by the Port Development Company since 2005.
The successful certification has shown that the environmentally relevant operational processes within the scope of responsibility of the Port Development Company satisfy the great demands of ISO 14001.
"By voluntarily introducing the eco-management system we want to fulfil our responsibility for the environment even more and we want to further reduce the environmental impact caused by our company. This is a continuous process which gives more attention to environmental aspects in our day-to-day activities", explains Ulrich Bauermeister, managing director of Hafen-Entwicklungsgesellschaft Rostock mbH, adding: "We also want to encourage other port operations to get certification as well."
For instance, the Port Development Company will in the future obtain more climate friendly cars with natural gas drive, contribute to the seaport's in-house electricity supply by operating a PV facility and check the feasibility of energy-saving LED lighting for port areas when replacing existing lighting.
The Port Development Company will prove annually - as has been the practice for ISO 9001 so far - that the company's activities satisfy the requirements of the standard through an external audit by DNV GL SE Business Assurance Germany for ISO 14001, too.
