Gothenburg, Sweden's big port, plans to increase intermodal rail capacity 50 per cent this fall with APM Terminals laying in track, cranes and adding a sixth access line to run three 750-metre trains simultaneously, according to Shipping Gazette.
This is part of a total SEK800 million (US$120 million) APMT investment designed to increase the capacity, efficiency, productivity and competitiveness of the terminal.
Gothenburg is the busiest container port in Scandinavia, with volume of 860,000 TEU in 2013, 90 per cent handled by APMT Gothenburg.
Nearly half of the container traffic moves by rail, the highest proportion in Europe. There are 25 weekly rail shuttles linking the terminal with industrial and population centres in Sweden and Norway.
"With the increased train capacity, we deliver another competitive advantage to our customers whose supply chains can realise time and money savings," said APMT Gothenburg CEO Keld Pedersen.
"Equally important, train operators gain an extra 15 per cent track capacity as we extend rail tracks from 640 metres to 750 metres," said Mr Pedersen.
Expanded rail access will bring benefits not only to port capacity and operations, but also to the environment as long-haul truck traffic is also reduced, he said.
